The beauty of the movie Paranormal Activity is that even though it lacks the kind of special effects seen in typical horror movies it is amazingly frightening. That's because it feels very real. Even hardened horror flick enthusiasts have said that Paranormal Activity got to them on a deeper level, leaving them shaken and bewildered. If you Google the phrase '"paranormal activity" scariest' you get over 5 million hits, many of them reviewers saying it was the scariest movie they'd ever seen.
This movie will have inevitable comparisons to The Blair Witch Project. That is because it is shot either with a hand held camera or a camera on a tripod. The characters are unknown actors, and the style of the movie is that it is real. It has been labeled as a "mockumentary," but the humorous connotation of that word doesn't fit with this movie. One reason it works so well is that it gradually builds up to the scariest parts, drawing you in little by little. The story is quite simple: the young couple's house is haunted. You get everything from non-threatening noises to interactions between the characters and demons. The build-up is quite effective.
The fact that it was shot on digital video and feels "homemade" works to this film's advantage because you're able to be drawn in by a video that looks like it could have been shot by you, or your neighbor. The two stars, Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat work well together, and the dialog they come up with (because they were given outlines rather than word-for-word scripts) is mundane and "normal" enough that you feel like these are people you know. The entire film takes place in Katie and Micah's house, and the build-up of terror depends largely on Micah's curiosity and willingness to "engage" the spirit, even if it means Katie getting hurt. You can't help but feel that if Micah wasn't such a jerk about it, none of it would have happened.
Even though we don't ever see the actual demon, the mere suggestion is enough to scare even the most jaded horror movie veterans out of their seats, and maybe out of their minds.
